CHAPTER 2: EPISODE 1- Losing Roots (1)

𝗠𝗔𝗬𝗔𝗡𝗔

I am Mayana Hillson. My life shattered the day I lost everything. There are no words to describe the kind of pain that lingers in my heart, a pain I wouldn't wish on anyone. I am one of those who have lost everything they held dear.

*****

It was early in the morning when I left for college with my dad. Our home was nothing extravagant, just a modest apartment where we lived—a family of four: my parents, my little sister Alicia, and me. We weren't wealthy, but we had each other. That was enough for me. I was content. I never cared that I didn’t have friends. I had my family, and that was all that mattered.

As I walked down the apartment stairs, I noticed something I hadn’t paid much attention to before—the cracks in the walls had spread, like spider veins, far worse than the last time I saw them.

"Don't you think the building needs repairs?" I asked my dad as we walked together. He nodded, saying, "I’ll bring it up to the apartment committee. It’s becoming dangerous."

Dangerous. I didn’t realize how true those words were until it was too late.

From My home to the college way, I was cursing the Apartment committee's carelessness, I was worried, because of someone's carelessness, this building might break down and fall, causing people's life.

In college, I was just another quiet student, easily overlooked. My goal was simple: to finish my M.B.A. and get into INDIGO Co-op, the company of my dreams. I didn’t need friends or social life—just that ambition.

*******

I was unusually excited to return home that day. My mom had promised to make Asian hot pot with dumplings for lunch, and I couldn’t wait to taste it. Food was my weakness, especially anything Asian. I smiled the entire way home, daydreaming about the meal and the warmth of home.

All the way to my home, I was smiling brightly, my Eyes was sparkling. " I can't wait for the launch! I am almost near my home! " I thought excitedly.

But when I turned the corner to my apartment building, everything I knew—everything I loved—collapsed before my eyes.

Crowds surrounded a mountain of rubble. My home was gone. In its place was a mass of broken concrete and twisted metal, debris piled on top of each other like discarded memories. The sight knocked the breath out of me. My heart pounded in my chest, and for a moment, I couldn’t move. My eyes, once sparkling with anticipation, were now filled with pure, unrelenting fear.

"Mom... Alicia..." I whispered. My voice trembled as I pushed my way through the crowd, desperate to get closer. "No... this can’t be happening."

People tried to hold me back, their hands gripping my arms, telling me it was too dangerous, that I needed to wait. But how could I wait? How could I stand there while my mother and sister were trapped beneath the rubble, maybe... maybe dying? My heart couldn’t bear it. I shoved them away with all the strength I had left, screaming, “Let me through! My mom and sister are in there!”

One woman tried to reason with me, “It’s not safe, sweetheart. You need to wait for the rescuers.”

But her words were meaningless. “They’ll die if I wait!” I screamed, my voice breaking. I bit down on her hand when she wouldn’t let go, pushing her aside before I dashed into the destruction. I didn’t care about the danger. I just needed to find them.

I clawed at the rubble with my bare hands, rocks cutting into my skin as I searched, praying to hear their voices, to see their faces. “Mom! Alicia! Please, answer me!” I begged, tears blurring my vision as dust coated my hair, my clothes, my skin. My hands shook, bloody and bruised, but I couldn’t stop. I wouldn’t stop.

They might be here or there! I can't let them die!

“Mom... You promised me hot pot... I was so excited... Alicia... I’ll teach you how to draw, I swear. I won’t get angry when you ask me for help again... Just... just tell me where you are.” My voice cracked under the weight of my sobs.

I looked at My shaky hands and noticed my trembling body, I shouted, gritting teeth.

"MOM! ALICIA! please Answer me."

But there was no response. Suddenly I slapped myself, hoping—begging—that this was a nightmare and I’d wake up. But it wasn’t.

"Why is this not ending?"

Looking up at the clear, serene sky, I felt like the world was mocking me. How could the sky be so peaceful when my life was crumbling beneath it? “Mom... please...” I whimpered, my voice barely audible. My tears won't stop dropping, sitting on the rubble all alone, Realizing that I have lost the Place i called home and may be my beloved ones; was a worse feeling.

Then, I saw the rescuers coming, urging me to step back. “It’s not safe here. We’ll handle this.” I walked towards them trembling, still on the rubble, "My mom and sister... they’re under there... please, you have to save them..." I pleaded, my voice desperate, almost unrecognizable. Pointing at the place where I was before, asking them to save my family like a mad person.

The rescuer looked at my face for a second without any word, then said "We'll try our best to save the people alive under the rubble, till then please go out from here!".

I didn’t want to leave, but my legs betrayed me as I stumbled away, helpless, hoping they would find them alive. I clenched my fist, assuring myself that everything will be fine. As if I don't want to accept the reality.

With trembling hands, I dialed my dad’s number.

"H-hello, dad! "

"what is it, Mayana?!" he replied as usual.

"Dad… Our house… Mom and Alicia." I said in a weak voice, not to sound like I am crying.

"What are you trying to say, I didn't understand." he questioned.

Even though, I tried not to cry, I still burst into tears while answering my dad.

"… Dad… Please come here, Mom and alicia..."

"Mayana, Why are you crying?" he asked worried. "Where are you? and what about your mother and Alicia?" He questioned unstoppable.

How should I answer him, how should I tell him that our house has turned into a pile of rubble, that they are under that rubble.

"dad! the apartment has collapsed, everything is just rubble.." I answered, Gathering all of my courage.

"What?! " he shouted, panic rising in his voice. I heard the phone drop before the call disconnected. He was coming.

******

From Afternoon to Evening, I waited standing there, seeing rescuers taking out bodies from the rubble, some alive and some dead. Carefully looking at the faces of the people, who came out alive from the rubble, Not even daring to look at the dead bodies, I did not ask the rescuers that if there is any remaining alive people under the rubble, fearing that they would answer something which I don't want to hear.

The sun was setting slow, I saw a familiar figure coming, it was my father, Nikolas hillson. I ran towards him, crying. I saw my father's sad face, it was like he was soulless, he doesn't even look at me, just blankly staring at the rubble behind me. I snapped him out, by calling him.

"Dad."

"Uh… Mayana, Are you alright, my dear?", My dad asked, His voice was barely a whisper. He cupped my face but doesn't looked into my eyes and I nodded in reply, unable to speak.

"...Your mom and sister… Do you know where are they? " He asked, hesitatingly.

I stared at my father's face, without saying anything, he looked at me for a hopeful answer. I shook my head, saying in a low voice "No! I didn't find them in injured people."

Hearing me, saying this, my dad looked in the direction of dead bodies, the place, I don't even glanced at. I saw my father's eyes, his eyes was filled with the same fear that I had, the fear of losing beloved ones.

"D-dad! " I called him, gaining his attention. He looked at me, with that soulless face.

"I-I think, mom and Alicia, were gone out for shopping, s-so they might be still doing shopping! " I lied, Lied to myself, I didn't wanted to accept the reality of my fate, so I gave myself a fake assurance. I knew that my mom was at home in afternoon, cooking hotpot for me, but then also, I lied.

"So, why she is not receiving my phone calls?!" said my dad, frowning.

"Mom m-might be busy?! " I gave a fake hope to myself and my dad.

"Phew!" my dad released a sigh of relief, accepting my fake hope.

But just then, A man came from my behind, to in front of us. That man was from our neighbor's family.

"Nikolas! " That man called in a very sad voice, Seems like he lost his some family members.

"Jose! Did you find your family members?! " My dad asked, worried.

That man nodded, but then he burst into tears, saying "My son died, and My mother too, my wife…she is alive but injured very badly."

His son was same age of my sister, Mister Jose and his wife wanted a child for so long. after fifteen years of their marriage they had a child, but now, their one and only child is dead.

"But… I am not here to talk about my family.", Mister Jose wiped his tears.

"Then…? " My dad asked, anxious.

My heart was beating so fast, as if it will come out from my chest, because I knew, I lied. I guessed that Mister Jose is here to talk about them, obviously he is not here to chit-chat about anything in this situation. I wish that he will say something hopeful, like they are just a little injured.

"Your… Wife, I... I saw her-"

"Saw her?! Where? " My dad asked cutting Mister Jose's words off, griping his Upper arm.

".. I" Mister Jose hesitated.

"Is she back from shopping?! " My dad asked me, looking into my direction. I just blinked and looked down. I have no words to answer my dad or to continue my lie.

Mister Jose took deep breath out and said sternly" Nikolas! "

"....!" My dad stopped saying.

"I saw your wife's and daughter's dead body..!" Mister Jose said, without hesitation.

Hearing this, My shocked dad ran towards the place where dead bodies were kept, Mister Jose followed him. And I, I was there, on the same place, I didn't move a inch. I knew I was lying to myself, but I still held a little hope.

The Reality hit my soul very hard that it feels like my soul is fading away from my body. I was still hesitating to take a step towards the dead bodies, but I started to walk slowly towards that area.

I saw My dad, The Man Who was always smiling was now Crying. My dad was hugging my mom and sister tightly. The strongest man ever, looked so weak in this situation.

At this time, Staring at My broken father, I Realized What is the feeling of helplessness clearly is!

My Mother was the Soul of my father, He loved her very much deeply. And Now he has Lost his wife and his one of the Daughter. Even if I say some comforting Words to My dad, it would not Work on him, As he has lost his Soul and the one who have lost its soul, it's not easy for them to recover.

I Just stared blankly at My father Who was grieving for his beloveds. I sighed and looked at the beautiful evening sky which is soon going to become a dark beautiful Night and mumbled. "Will we Meet ever again? mom, Alicia. "
